Frequently Asked Questions

What are the different types of waste?

Solid waste (wet & dry), liquid waste, construction & demolition waste, e-waste (electronic & electrical), hazardous/industrial waste, biomedical waste, plastic waste… the list is long.

What is sanitary sewage?

It’s sewage from a home or community and contains human waste and wash water. It includes toilet, bath, laundry, lavatory and kitchen sink wastes. Its composition is typically about 99.9% water and 0.1% organic and inorganic impurities.

What is industrial sewage?

It’s the discharge from facilities involved in manufacturing, such as pharmaceuticals, paper and textiles, chemical processing, oil and gas refining, etc. This sewage usually has a high chemical concentration.

What is composting?

Composting is a controlled process that converts organic materials (wet/biodegradable waste) into a nutrient-rich soil amendment or mulch through natural decomposition. The end product is compost – a dark, crumbly, earthy-smelling material that boosts plant growth.

What are the benefits of switching to solar power?

For you: Save money on electricity bills, ensure uninterrupted power supply, heat water, etc. For nature: Fewer air pollutants such as sulphur dioxide and particulate matter. Reduced Greenhouse gas emissions.

What is rainwater harvesting?

During monsoon, rainwater is collected and stored in natural reservoirs (aquifers) and artificial/manmade reservoirs (tanks). This water can be used for flushing, washing, gardening, irrigation and even consumption with necessary treatment.

How much do the systems cost and how long do they take to install?

This depends on your specific requirement. AlterEnergyZ will survey your site/premises, conduct, if necessary, a waste audit (how much waste is generated, how is it disposed, etc) and give you an estimate of time period and costs. In general, a biogas system for a household generating 3kg of wet waste a day costs Rs. 40,000-45,000 plus taxes, while a sewage treatment system for a household costs Rs. 65,000 plus GST.

Does AlterEnergyZ offer maintenance services?

Yes. We also offer, on a case-to-case basis, maintenance of systems not set up by us.

Does AlterEnergyZ offer subsidies?

No; we help you get the subsidies by liaising with the respective government agency.

Case Scenarios

We are a nuclear family, living in an apartment / flat, how can we manage our waste and become self-reliant?
  • Segregate your waste. Use a composting bin or a biogas plant for your wet waste and give your dry waste to a scrapyard or to scrap collectors. A composting bin will give you compost, a biogas plant will give you gas for your cooking stove and also compost.
  • Use a solar power system for heating water and also for backup power (inverter).
  • Use natural/organic products in your home, car, etc.
  • Ask a waste management company like AlterEnergyZ to visit your housing society and explain the economic and ecological benefits and the setting up processes of a sewage treatment plant, biogas plant, biomass management setup, rainwater harvesting setup, etc.
  • Most setups are one-time investments and offer subsidies.
We are a family living in a villa / bungalow, how can we manage our waste and become more self-reliant?
  • Segregate your waste and give your dry waste to a scrapyard or to scrap collectors.
  • Use a biogas plant for food and biodegradable waste (husk, coconut shells, garden waste, etc.). Use the gas generated to supplement your cooking gas requirements and the compost generated in your garden.
  • Invest in a solar power setup to supplement your electricity, backup power and for heating water.
  • Set up a sewage treatment plant or use the no soak pit option from AlterEnergyZ to convert your sewage into greywater for your flush, garden etc.
  • Use natural/organic products in your home, car, etc.
  • Most environmentally-friendly setups are one-time investments and offer subsidies.
What environmentally-friendly options are available for businesses and industries?
  • Depending on the size and nature of the business/industry, invest in a sewage treatment plant to manage sewage and/or industrial waste (if manufacturing is involved).
  • Solar power will reduce or even rid your dependency on external electricity supply. In some cases, you may even be able to sell electricity back to the grid.
  • Most setups are one-time investments and offer subsidies.
  • Natural/organic products used on your premises, in your vehicles, etc, will further reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Be part of environmental efforts, such as AlterEnergyZ’s social causes, to earn Green points on taxes, etc, and earn a positive name for your company.
We are an institute and we want to make a difference to the environment.
  • Great! Invest in a biomass management setup (where your dry wastes can be stored and collected), composting bins or a biogas plant for your wet and biodegradable waste, a sewage treatment plant, and a solar energy system.
  • Most of these setups and systems are one-time investments and offer subsidies.
  • Install sanitary napkins’ incinerators.
  • Use natural/organic products on your premises, in your vehicles, etc.
  • Have waste management companies like AlterEnergyZ conduct awareness drives for your institutes’ students, staff, parents, etc.
