Zeal to Make a Difference

As the brainchild of Samruddh Hegde Desai, we are a firm dedicated fully to the environmental sector, with a larger goal of changing Goa’s Waste Management culture.

Samruddh was born into a family of freedom fighters and teachers, in Quepem, South Goa, and holds a Mechanical Engineer degree from the Goa Engineering College and an Executive MBA from the Goa Institute of Management.

After 14 years in the corporate sector, 12 of which were with Vedanta PLC at a mid-management level, Samruddh’s love for the environment and desire for personal independence led him to co-found M/s AlterEnergyZ in 2014 with business partner Brian Farias.

Leaving a Green Mark

AlterEnergyZ has set up sanitary napkins’ vending machines in all colleges in Goa through the Goa Waste Management Corporation.

We also currently manage waste for about 5,000 households across Goa.

On a daily basis, we convert approximately 5,000 kg of wet/organic waste into useful compost or biogas and about 30,000 litres of kitchen or sewage water into useful water for gardening.

We also work in the field of rainwater harvesting and have executed projects which recharge groundwater of up to 2 crore litres on an annual basis.

Spreading Awareness, Impacting Society

Along with commercial projects, AlterEnergyZ also undertakes impactful social projects that are easy to replicate.

We currently run 2 pilot projects that focus on decentralization of waste management. The projects cover 100 households in one ward of Raia Panchayat and all the households in all the wards of Bogmalo Panchayat. In both projects, wet waste is collected separately, door-to-door, and composted using simple aerobic composting methods. With exemplary results, the projects have the potential to be used in all panchayats across Goa as they require minimum land, water and almost zero electricity.

In 2020, we set up a demonstrative Waste Management Park, indicating different ways of composting, at the Fr. Agnel College, Pilar, with the help of Rotary Club of Panaji.

In 2019, Samruddh conceptualized Project ‘Nirmal Nirmalya’ with two teachers of Popular High School, Margao. The project was for the disposal of nirmalya (waste of flowers used in rituals) generated during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. In 7 days, the project, that introduced students and their families to the safe disposal of nirmalya, converted around 2,500 kg of flower waste into useful manure.

We also conduct regular, free, training workshops and briefing sessions on waste management for institutes ranging from primary government schools to elite establishments in higher education.

Dignity & an Entrepreneurship Model

As Samruddh says, AlterEnergyZ works because it is driven by the principles of “creating a difference” and “making life meaningful”.

“We want to create a model of entrepreneurship for people who are looking to get into the waste management sector, which is still largely disorganized. We want to bring dignity to the work done by sanitation workers and industry status to waste management,” says Samruddh.

Over 100 Clients & Counting

AlterEnergyZ has grown from a team of 2 in 2014 to a team of 6 today and we have over 20 sanitation workers onboard. Our offer of Products & Services too has increased exponentially to include a plethora of Solid & Liquid Waste Management options, Menstrual Hygiene Management machines, and Renewable Energy choices.

What makes us special is that we have ventured into almost every sphere of environment preservation and we provide the necessary handholding through the lifecycle of each project we undertake.
