India’s EPI Rank: A Wake-Up Call for Our Waste Management System.
Did you know? As per the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2022 report, India ranks 180th out of 180 countries, making it the lowest-ranked country in terms of environmental performance, with a score of just 18.9.
This alarming statistic is more than just a number—it’s a wake-up call for urgent action.
At AlterEnergyZ, we believe that this is not the India we want to live in, nor the legacy we want to leave for future generations. As a Goa-based pioneer in solid & liquid waste management and renewable energy solutions, our mission has always been to drive sustainable transformation—one community, one household, one industry at a time.
Understanding the EPI Score
The Environmental Performance Index (EPI), developed by Yale and Columbia Universities, ranks countries based on 40 performance indicators across 11 issue categories. These include:
- Waste management
- Air quality
- Biodiversity
- Climate policy
- Water resources
- Sanitation and more.
India's low ranking indicates severe shortcomings in areas such as waste management infrastructure, air pollution control, and sustainability practices. This directly affects the quality of life, public health, and ecological balance.
Waste Management: A National Crisis
Scenes of unsegregated waste piling up on roads, railway tracks, and in public spaces have sadly become all too familiar across many Indian cities and towns. This is not merely an aesthetic issue—it is an environmental emergency.
Key issues include:
- Unsegregated municipal waste
- Inadequate recycling facilities
- Low public awareness
- Improper disposal of plastic and hazardous waste
- Limited enforcement of environmental policies
AlterEnergyZ’s Role in Driving Change
Founded in 2014 by Samruddh Hegde Desai, AlterEnergyZ has worked with over 100 clients across households, industries, and the hospitality sector to create real, measurable impact.
Here’s how we’re contributing to a cleaner, greener India:
🌱 Solid & Liquid Waste Management Systems
We provide customised and efficient waste segregation, composting, and treatment solutions tailored to urban and rural settings.
⚡ Renewable Energy Solutions
By promoting solar and biogas systems, we help reduce carbon footprints and make clean energy accessible and affordable.
🧑🏫 Community Education & Training
We actively engage in awareness drives, training programmes, and partnerships to empower people to take ownership of their waste.
The Way Forward: A Collective Responsibility
It’s time we stop treating waste as “out of sight, out of mind.” A cleaner India isn’t just the government’s job—it’s everyone’s responsibility. From individual households to large corporations, we must rethink how we produce, manage, and dispose of waste.
What Can You Do?
- Segregate waste at source – wet, dry, and hazardous
- Compost organic waste instead of sending it to landfills
- Reduce plastic use and support eco-friendly alternatives
- Support companies and policies that promote sustainability
- Partner with AlterEnergyZ for long-term waste management solutions
India’s EPI rank may be low today, but with conscious effort and sustainable action, we can change the narrative.
Let’s build a cleaner India, one step at a time—with conscious choices and expert solutions.
