How We Sustainably Handled Waste for 6,000+ Workers at Mopa Airport Goa
Managing waste on large construction sites is messy, expensive, and often non-compliant. It gets even harder when you’re housing over 6,000 workers and operating round the clock.
That was the challenge at Mopa Airport, Goa, one of the state’s largest infrastructure projects — and also India’s first IGBC Green-Certified Airport Terminal

In June 2021, AlterEnergyZ was brought in to create a zero-waste system that could handle thousands of workers — without daily hauling, odour issues, or a single trip to the landfill.
Here’s how the system worked, and why your next project needs one just like it.
What We Implemented on Site
This wasn’t a lab test. It was real-time, high-volume, high-stakes waste handling. Here’s what we set up:
- On-Site Composting with Portable Tank Units
- Compact tank composters were deployed directly on-site. These used a combination of bacterial culture, odour control additives, and sawdust to safely break down wet waste — with no smell or mess.
- Manual Dry Waste Segregation
- A trained 4-person team (3 workers and 1 supervisor) handled daily collection, sorting, and segregation of dry waste. Recyclables were sent to authorised third-party facilities.
- Zero Waste Target
- The entire system was designed to eliminate landfill dependence — and it did exactly that.

Why Projects Like Yours Need Systems Like This
Whether you're building an airport, managing a college campus, or overseeing an industrial site — large-scale waste needs more than just a collection plan.
This model worked for Mopa because:
- It reduces operational headaches
- On-site composting means fewer transport runs and lower ongoing costs.
- It keeps you compliant
- The system followed Goa’s Solid Waste Management norms and passed inspections without issue.
- It scales with your site
- Whether it's 500 people or 6,000+, we tailor systems to your space and waste load.
- It makes your site cleaner and safer
- A cleaner, odour-free site supports hygiene, better working conditions, and stronger public or stakeholder trust.
