How Flames Restaurant in Chandor Turned Food Waste Into Fuel — And Cut LPG Use
In the restaurant business, two things pile up fast — kitchen waste and LPG bills.
Flames Restaurant in Chandor tackled both problems with a single, sustainable solution: biogas. By installing in-house digesters that convert food waste into cooking gas, Flames is now running part of its kitchen on fuel generated entirely from its own scraps.
The setup was executed by AlterEnergyZ and inspected by GEDA (Goa Energy Development Agency) — adding both credibility and compliance value.
This isn’t theory. It’s a working system that’s saving money, managing waste, and showing the way forward for Goa’s hospitality sector.
The Systems Installed at Flames Garden Café & Flames Restaurant
Two systems were set up across two locations:
- Flames Garden Café:
- A 1.5 m³ biogas plant for the smaller café kitchen’s food waste volume.
- Flames Restaurant (main location):
- A 3 m³ biogas unit to handle heavier waste from the full-scale restaurant.
Each system processes:
- Kitchen prep waste (vegetable peels, leftover food)
- Washwater from cleaning rice, dals, and produce
- Canteen or plate scrapings

Real Results: What the Flames Team Is Seeing
🔥 Biogas is piped directly into the kitchen - Clean-burning gas powers a standard stove, just like LPG.
📉 LPG usage is reduced - The system covers 20–30% of daily gas requirements depending on kitchen load.
🧼 The kitchen is cleaner - No more rotting wet waste or overflowing bins — scraps go directly into the digester.
♻️ No waste sent to landfill - Waste is used, not dumped. It’s a closed-loop system.
Why Other Restaurants in Goa Should Follow This Model
With rising LPG costs, tighter waste norms, and growing eco-conscious tourism, Goa’s hospitality sector can’t afford to ignore sustainability any longer.
Here’s why biogas makes sense for restaurants:
- ✅ Reduces LPG bills long-term
- ✅ Manages food waste on-site with no mess or odour
- ✅ Improves compliance with PCB & solid waste regulations
- ✅ Adds CSR and green branding value
- ✅ Qualifies for GEDA support or inspection
